Europe’s 2028 T20 World Cup pathway took shape in 2026

Three men’s Europe sub-regional qualifiers were held in 2026. Jersey won Qualifier A, Denmark won Qualifier B and Portugal won Qualifier C. Those teams advanced to the 2027 Europe Qualifier, where Scotland is also due to enter directly under the published pathway.

Italy and the Netherlands advance directly to the global qualifier because they were the remaining European teams not already qualified for the 2028 tournament under the ICC’s stated route. This is more current than the earlier draft’s speculative 2027 qualification claims.

Portugal completed the final 2026 sub-regional event

Finland hosted Qualifier C from 14 to 21 August. Portugal defeated Spain in the final, completing a ten-team event that also included Bulgaria, Czechia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Isle of Man, Israel and Luxembourg.

The result illustrates Europe’s broadening competitive base. Growth is better measured through registered competitions, facilities, participation and qualification results than through an unsupported “fastest-growing sport” label.

Why T20 supports emerging cricket nations

Twenty-over cricket fits a shorter match window than one-day or multi-day formats. That can reduce venue time and make multi-team qualifier schedules easier to stage. The compressed format also increases the impact of powerplay performance, boundary hitting, death bowling and fielding.

A short tournament can be volatile, so one result should be read alongside a nation’s longer development record. Official scorecards provide context such as overs, wickets, run rate and player contributions.
